Epic Garden Plot is a hosted version of Epic's electronic health record software for independent medical groups. Epic launched it in March 2022 as a cloud EHR for groups that want Epic software but have no partner to extend an Epic environment to them.

Epic hosts the software, supports users, and handles configuration and update rollouts, so a practice doesn't need its own servers or an internal team to maintain them.

Key features

As above, Garden Plot is essentially Epic EHR with some integrated products from outside vendors:

Clinical documentation and orders: Clinicians document visits, place orders, and review results in a single patient chart that holds notes, prescriptions, and orders.
Scheduling and patient access: Patients reach the practice through MyChart, Epic's patient portal. Garden Plot's text-messaging program sends appointment reminders, video visit links, provider notifications, and bill reminders, and patients can opt out by texting STOP. Patients can also book online with or without a MyChart account.
E-prescribing: Surescripts supplies the e-prescribing network. Prescribers can see expected out-of-pocket costs, lower-cost alternatives, and prior authorization requirements before they send a prescription to the pharmacy.
Billing and RCM: covers eligibility checks, claims, payment tracking, and reporting, using Epic's billing tools alongside Availity, Change Healthcare, and OSG Billing Services.
Interoperability: Garden Plot customers exchange records with other Epic organizations and with non-Epic systems through Epic's interoperability network, Care Everywhere. In April 2022, Epic chose Lyniate as the integration engine for Garden Plot so that practices can connect with larger health systems that share their patients.

Integrated third-party products

Epic's 12 listed partner vendors are: Availity, Biscom, Change Healthcare, Healthwise, Intelligent Medical Objects, Iron Bridge, Lyniate, OSG Billing Services, Solarity, Sphere, Surescripts, and Wolters Kluwer. Their roles include eligibility and claims, secure document delivery, patient education, clinical terminology, data migration, interface engine services, payments, e-prescribing, and clinical reference content.

Epic Garden Plot vs Community Connect

Community Connect lets a health system extend its own Epic instance to nearby medical groups. Epic reported nearly 40,000 providers using it in 2022 (15 years after its release)and recommends it where available because it creates a shared patient record with the local hospital. Garden Plot applies when Community Connect is not an option.
